Basic Bitch

Someone who is unflinchingly upholding of the status quo and stereotypes of their gender without even realizing it. She engages in typical, unoriginal behaviors, modes of dress, speech, and likes. She is tragically/laughably unaware of her utter lack of specialness and intrigue. She believers herself to be unique, fly, amazing, and a complete catch, when really she is boring, painfully normal, and par. She believes her experiences to be crazy, wild, and different or somehow more special than everything that everybody else is doing, when really, almost everyone is doing or has done the exact same thing. She is typical and a dime a dozen. There are many subtypes of basicness, such as the basic ratchet, the basic sorority bitch, the basic groupie bitch, the basic I'm-so-Carrie-from-Sex-and-the-City bitch, etc, but ultimately, they all share the common thread of being expendable and unnoteworthy and, in some cases, having absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Although I've heard this term plenty of times, I never really knew the true meaning of it. So, while I'm still not conceding to the fact that I'm getting old, I do admit I had to look it up in the urban dictionary. I'm still young enough to be gleefully entertained by it though!

#SecondLifeChallenge – Relaxation in Second Life

Despite the many challenges and steep learning curve in Second Life, I've often felt more relaxed than not when logged on - once I got the hang of it, that is. Like many others, I liked to spend a good deal of time exploring photogenic sims and taking pictures of them. I favored natural settings so once the picture was done, I would stay at the sim and just space out and listen to the sounds. I used to do monthly destination posts where I would gather my favorite sims from the past 4 weeks and write little blurbs about them. And then blogging happened. By itself, blogging is actually pretty therapeutic for me and despite any technical difficulties which might present themselves, I wind up feeling a lot more relaxed than I did when I sat down at my computer. There's something about creating which seems to put everything into alignment for me physically, mentally and even emotionally. Once I started blogging however, I found myself thrust into a wonderful and very active community which resulted in me getting much more connected than I had been up to that point and my sim-hopping was put on the back burner. So, for this challenge, I decided to revisit one of my old favorites, Mystical Fae Forest. Inara Pey did a write up of the sim here and Marcus VanDouser did a video which you can see here.

Another activity which always seems to settle me no matter what's going on in my life is listening to my favorite DJ spin the blues at Toby's Juke Joint. I've been going to her shows for about a year now and she never disappoints. I've dubbed her professor of the blues because she's taught me a lot about the genre. Although she brings a great crowd of friendly people, and despite how chatty I can be, I usually completely ignore local chat and zone out to the music. She has a regular schedule on Wednesdays at 8:00 pm and Fridays at 10:00 pm but she often takes the stream for unscheduled sets and if I'm lucky, I can stop what I'm doing and drop in. I haven't been able to make it for the last month and I hope that changes soon otherwise I might just have to rearrange my schedule again.

Sassy's labor of love

if it makes you happy

Being that I'm more dialed in to social media than I was before joining Second Life, I've been getting a lot of exposure to the opinions of others who don't know me, yet have ideas about what I do nonetheless. Although they aren't specifically aiming their comments at me, I've still been prompted to give it some thought. At first I was offended to see people claim that blogging in Second Life killed creativity and reduced us to low level marketers but I understand now that those words describe how they feel and don't necessarily reflect the opinions of those of us who have a passion for it. During one particular discussion, someone linked me to this post which pretty much hit the nail on the head in terms of why I do it. For me, blogging forces my mind to break from the thoughts of everyday stressors and focuses my energy on something which demands my attention, while at the same time challenging me creatively. The fact that I really love what I do means that I get into this zone where I'm totally present and engaged. And I do believe it's good for my mind and body.

2017 started out with too much pain and suffering for some of my loved ones in real life. Luckily, by the end of the year I got to watch each of them heal. I try not to internalize the pain of those I care deeply about but since I'm human, I still struggle with that at times which is probably why I tend to limit the number of people in that pool. There are some in world who I've grown to care deeply about over the last year, despite vowing not to. It's different here though since everything is typed instead of spoken and since there's no eye contact, it's a lot easier to hide frustration and filter my words. Even so, I found myself telling a dear friend how frustrated I was that they were suffering and in the process probably made them back off a little on what they share with me. I know I'm helpless against other people's problems but I still get this impulse to start running my mouth. So I started this new year mildly disappointed in my humanness.
